Families come to see me for a variety of reasons. Some families are trying to cope with the turmoil of separation or divorce. Others are adjusting to the growing pains that come with creating a blended family. Still others have experienced a terrible event, like a death in the family, an accident, trauma, or a disease. Even major blessings, like having a baby or adopting a child, can throw a family for a loop.
I work with adults, ages 15 and up.
Instead of focusing on one individual, family counseling looks at the complicated dynamics between family members. Each family is completely unique. It has its own personality. I work directly with the adults in a family to empower them to better understand the problematic dynamic that is robbing them of the peace they would like in their home.
I work with parents, adult children, and adult siblings. Some family members aren’t ready to come to counseling, while others, for whatever reason, aren’t available. That’s okay. If you think that may be true for your family, don’t let that stop you from getting the help you need.
One thing to remember about your family is that it has its own strengths that are unique. When a counselor can help you discover those strengths and use them to begin building healthy relationships, that’s therapy at its best.
